Narcocorridos have become a type of folklore story which portrays the heroics and lives of Narcos. Narcocorridos are "...anthems celebrating drug traffickers or chronicling events and the way of people in the narco-world" (Campbell, 2014). Contemporary narcocorridos range from simply danceable music, songs that report on events in the drug war to songs that encourage violence and criminality (Campbell, 2014). An example of a story in a corrido is the corrido "La Ultima Sombra" by Gerardo Ortiz. In this corrido, a young man who is tortured by the military and later becomes a Sinaloa Cartel boss. He says that thanks to the famous Cartel leader, El Chapo, he has money and power (Campbell, 2014). Often Narcocorridos glorify the lifestyle of the Narco. They mention the money, power, and women that come by having the life of the Narco. Narcocorridos are also about the respect that Narcos get in Mexican society. One of the most famous corridos by Los Tucanes de Tijuana, "El Centenario," talks about a man who was poor and often mistreated by people, but once he joined the Cartel, he had wealth and respect of people. The music videos for Narcocorridos often show the "...strutting macho swagger of young males clutching high-caliber pistols and automatic weapons" (Campbell, 2014). Narcocorridos are also known to promote violence. Within the Narcocorrido genre, there is a subgenre known as Movimiento Alterado (Disturbed Movement). These are the "sick corridos," which talk about the extreme acts of violence that Narcos do when fighting in their drug battles. The lyrics of a song by Bukana de Culiacan say, "With AK-47 and bazooka at the neck, cutting heads off anyone who crosses us, we are bloodthirsty, we like to kill" (Campbell, 2014). Narcocorridos are songs that glorify the money, luxury, women, and power that come with the Narco lifestyle and embrace the extreme violence that is part of the Narcoworld.
